We recommend a connected USB microphone for audio input. We prefer ones that connect straight from the microphone to the USB port (no mixing device or breakout box) best. For a list of best microphones to use, see this blog post. Now you can see all audio devices you have connected to your Mac, simply click the one you want to select it, System Preferences also lists what type of connection those devices use, such as USB, audio line in or built-in, you can also use the Input volume slider to change the selected microphone's sensitivity or toggle Use ambient noise.

I can't get Camtasia Studio 6.0 to record audio directly from the internal audio of a computer running Vista. Instead, Camtasia will only record audio from the built in mic. When looking in the recorder settings for audio options for device, there is only one device listed: Microphone (Realtek High Definition). Is there a way to add a device to this list? I thought it could be done somehow in Vista's control panel - sound - manage audio devices under the Recording Tab, but again, only the microphone is listed.
How can I add internal audio to this recording device list in Vista? Your help is much appreciated. Hi polymiker, sounds like you have what is known as a half duplex audio chip ie sound card you need a full duplex/ llaptops and some desktops OEM have only the basic essentails, on laptops the audio is shared with the mic hense you have no stero mix or PC speakers line out It's explained here If you have a desktop the only solution is to replace the onboard audio with a full duplex. Then you'll get this option for camatasia to use the stereo mix record what you hear in the speakers. If you could post back your system specs computer brand. Total recorder creates a virtual device so you can record from any source, there is a standard and pro version.
The Realtek HD soundcard is a full duplex sound card, which, in XP offers the following choices for recording: RECORDING CONTROL CD VOLUME MIC VOLUME LINE VOLUME STEREO MIX In XP you go to START/CONTROL PANEL/SOUNDS AND AUDIO DEVICES - Click the Audio Tab - Select SOUND RECORDING and then click on VOLUME. In the drop box that opens there is an OPTIONS box where you will find the above choices. For internal recording you have to select STEREO MIX - PRESS OK then close the box.
You will now see STEREO MIX in the RECORDING CONTROL box. Make sure that STEREO MIX is not muted and that the volume is up. Don't know how Vista handles this but then Vista has now been kenneled like the dog it was (who me cynical?).
